The County of Sonoma is pleased to announce the recruitment for the next County Counsel.
Sonoma County is nestled in Northern California’s Wine Country, just 30 miles north of San Francisco, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Marin County and San Pablo Bay to the south, and Solano, Napa, and Lake Counties to the east. It offers over 1,600 square miles of natural beauty, including the Russian River, redwood forests, rolling vineyards, and stunning coastline. Sonoma County is a general law county, governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. The Sonoma County Counsel’s Office is committed to providing the highest quality legal representation and advice, in a timely and responsive manner, to assist the County, its governing Board of Supervisors and other clients to promote the public interest, achieve programmatic and strategic goals and protect financial resources. The Sonoma County Counsel’s Office acts as the legal adviser to the Board of Supervisors, as well as the 29 departments and special districts throughout the County; including a Water Agency.
Sonoma County is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking leader to serve as its next County Counsel—a principled and strategic professional who combines deep public sector experience with a steadfast commitment to equity, innovation, and public service. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a creative, resilient, and collaborative legal mind to play a key role in shaping the future of Sonoma County governance. The ideal candidate is a seasoned municipal attorney with a strong generalist background in civil law, and the demonstrated ability to operate effectively in complex, high-stakes environments. Candidates should bring extensive experience managing or advising within a public law office—such as a County Counsel, City Attorney, Attorney General’s Office, or a private firm with a municipal law focus. Expertise in California local government law is essential, and experience in areas such as land use, (CEQA), labor and employment, civil litigation, and intergovernmental collaboration is strongly preferred. Senior-level attorneys from both public and private sectors are encouraged to apply. Out-of-state applicants are welcome, provided they have relevant California legal experience and are eligible for California bar licensure (required for this position).
